Best credit/debit card to use in Europe?

Im fed up of being ripped off by my bank (LLoyda and HSBC) when using my debit card abroad and was hoping that some of you kind people out there can recommend a card to use for mainly paying for meals and the occasional ATM withdrawal and dont rip you off with high charges in the process.

I did Google but all a bit of a minefield.

I have done a reasonable amount of travelling over the last few years and have used a Caxton FX MasterCard. You basically charge it up via your smart phone and use it like a debit card.

The conversion rates are okay (Euros are 1.1366 vs an interbank rate of 1.1620 today) and there are no charges for anything unless you use it to withdraw GBP from an atm in the UK.

You can also use it (via the laptop) to do cross currency if required. For instance if you go to the US and end up having USD left in the card but need Euros for your next trip you can convert one for the other (no doubt you okay the spread).

Most currencies you need are immediately available. I have used it for USD, euros, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Russian and Turkish without any problem. Only drawn cash in euros and usd
And never had any charges.

The charges come in parts - those from your bank and those from the local bank - it seems to be the norm for an ATM to charge about £4.00 for withdrawals anywhere in the world except when they belong to your own bank.

I signed up for a Halifax Clarity Card to use abroad. No fee to use anywhere in the world. No charges for using at an ATM. Was recommended on moneysavingexpert.com, along with the Post Office card. Now use every time I travel for cash and payments, and just make sure I pay it off in full.

The Post Office credit card has no charges for use abroad (anywhere - not just in Europe). Nationwide promise the same on their debit card if you have their premium account, which also gives travel and breakdown insurance, but in NZ at least half the banks were charging to use it when I was there in March.

Mrs N/Sold works for RBS so she gets that advantage gold account for free... so we get all the travel insurance for free

Nationwide are by far the best bank if you can get the FlexPlus account. It's £10 per month, but if you keep enough in your account you earn back £6 in interest - it includes travel insurance, breakdown cover, contents insurance, plus a few other things and most importantly: free withdrawals abroad. It's saved me an absolute fortune over the past year. Their Select credit card is also free to use abroad and gives a fantastic exchange rate, plus a years interest free too.

I've got a WeSwap card - the rates and ease of use are bug plusses but, paradoxically. I've not been working in any of the countries on their currency exchange list, so not had a (proper) chance to use it.

Metro bank debit card is free to use in Europe. The credit card is free as well but you need to hold a current account

Revolut - It messages you when a transaction is made - you pre load it and then just use it like a debit card.I set one up for my daughter to go to NY last year and was getting messages, at 2- 3 in the morning, informing me of the "shopping spree" she was on!!!

Supercard does that (the Post Office one) but you also earn airmiles. Not sure what can beat that?

Halifax.. Draw out at mastercard rates... as long as you pay it off that night no interest and no fees... not sure what can beat that for hard currency??

Postoffice... no transaction fee and you get the mastercard rate... not sure what can beat that for over seas transactions??
